When using my monopod on the night safari, instead of adjusting horizontal and vertical settings on the tripod itself, I simply leaned it in the direction I needed. It wasn't great, and only worked because our vehicle was fairly empty and I had an entire row of seats to myself. But even with that, I only got about five or six good photos from that setup. Short of having two bean bags andthe entire row to myself, this was a suitable compromise. A safari is a fantastic way to see a wide range of wildlife in its natural habitat. It’s also an opportunity to take lovely photos of that wildlife! However, there are some unique challenges to taking photos on safari. In this post, I’m going to share some safari photography tips to help ensure you get the best photos when you go on safari. Which shape will work for you will depend a bit on where you are likely to be shooting. I find the saddlebag style offers a good bit of versatility as it can be adapted to fit a variety of locations, from shooting over a window frame to balancing on the edge of a vehicle roof when shooting through a pop-up top. There is however quite a difference in the capabilities of these systems. At the more basic end, an autofocus system will allow you to select an area of the scene to focus on, and then focus appropriately. This is usually because the shutter speed is too low, and the user is hand holding a larger lens. A slow shutter speed means that any movement in your hand is translated into motion blur as you take the picture. You can fix this by increasing the shutter speed and/or resting the lens on a steady surface. On our last trip, we filled our bag with a mix of dried beans and some pillow stuffing which was a good mix . Most cameras have the option to shoot in both RAW and JPG if you need a stepping stone, although this will take up more memory card space. The main disadvantage of shooting in burst mode is that you will end up taking a lot more photos and using more memory card space. However, memory cards and memory in general are relatively inexpensive these days, so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Just be sure to always have an extra memory card with you. The simple flatter cushion-like shape can prove to be quite versatile, especially when shooting on the roof of a vehicle or from the floor. Personally I find it a bit less practical for safari use as it doesn’t mold to a vehicle window or door area as well as the other options.

That said, we have requested another copy of the 80-400 to test. We are not convinced that the copy that we first received was a good copy. It was soft at the long end. Keep in mind that more often than not in wildlife photography, you will be shooting at the long end and if that is the case, then the ability to zoom becomes less of an issue. Think of how you usually shoot the 28-300 lens you currently have when using it for wildlife and my guess is that you shoot at the 300 end most of the time. Obviously, it is not always the case. Also, as you consider it, think how often that at 300mm, you still crop your image to get closer.
